Racing for Stoves in Guatemala!

Partnering with Wichita Running Company for the Battle of the Bean 5K and Jelly Bean Dash, Mead’s Corner is privileged to be the non-profit organization receiving proceeds from the event. As Mead’s Corner is owned by the First United Methodist Church of Wichita, we have decided to give the proceeds from the race to the Guatemala Stoves Project started by a missions group at FUMC. The project was started several years ago and continues to grow in its success.

Many women in Guatemala are cooking with stoves that are on the ground and in windowless kitchens. Burns, lung disease, and eye diseases are major health concerns for women due to these fires. The Stoves Project is one that builds vented stoves out of concrete. They are both enclosed and up and off the ground.  The most important aspect of the Guatemalan stoves is that FUMC is teaching local men in different Mayan villages how to build these stoves themselves so that when the team leaves, the men are then self-sufficient and able to continue building.

Visit the shop to see a replica of one of the stoves. Visit to join the race and help our friends in Guatemala!
